Preface
One of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, "the nightingale", describes a
nightingale singing in distant China, bringing happiness and comfort to people,
even its beautiful singing impressed the emperor and the travelers from all over
the world. This fairy tale describes all of Andersen's imaginations about China.
In 1868, Andersen made an album of collages for the granddaughter of Adolphus
Druson, and one of the pages was entitled "China", which was pasted with
pictures of the Europeans' imagination about the Chinese -- flowers and birds,
little houses and pavilions. In the middle of the page, three lines of poetry
were specially written: "The Chinese eat rose syrup, use silk as mouthwash and
half of their houses are gilt." Although Andersen had never visited China during
his lifetime, this probably represented the most accurate and comprehensive
impression of China in the minds of the people of the Kingdom of Denmark at that
time.
In 1674, King Christin V of the Kingdom of Denmark sent a letter to emperor
Kangxi requesting the establishment of trade and navigation relations. The
merchant ship "Fortuna" of the Kingdom of Denmark arrived in Fuzhou after two
years' voyage, opening the first page of friendly exchanges between the two
countries. During more than three hundred years, China and the Kingdom of Denmark
have maintained close contacts. Moreover, in the western world, Denmark kingdom
is the second country to have established diplomatic ties with the People's
Republic of China. With the wide spread of Andersen's fairy tales, Chinese
people mostly learn about the Kingdom of Denmark based on their understanding of
Andersen. Thus it can be seen that culture and art are always the forerunner of
the communication of human civilization.
As the hometown of Hans Christian Andersen, the Kingdom of Denmark will hold
the " Tour in the Hometown of Hans Christian Andersen -- special exhibition
of Chinese calligraphy and painting in Denmark", which is one of the serial
activities of the spectacular exhibition "the relationship between China and
Denmark for 300 years" in the city museum of Odense city. It will display works
of Chinese calligraphy and painting carefully created by the representative
Chinese artists of the Chinese calligraphy and painting delegation invited by
the Chinese Culture Center in Denmark. The members of the delegation include
Pang Liming, Zhang Yaolai, Zhao Dechang, Jiao Xiaohong, Yu Jianshi, He Yuandong,
Guo Zhenshan, Xue Ming,Gao Shan, Yu Lan, Liu Qingyang, Huang Wenxin and so on.
It's believed that the show of their different artistic styles will impress
the Danish people with the unique charm of Chinese painting and calligraphy
tradition and the pursuit of painting aesthetics. We are hoping that through
this special exhibition, the beautiful rhythm of Chinese traditional culture
and art will echoe across the Kingdom of Denmark, just like the sound of the
nightingale in Andersen's fairy tale.
